Are you in the game? Your next event is competing against dozens of other events your attendee will come across in 2018. Whether your goal is to get your association\u2019s members to become volunteers, or to generate more revenue or brand awareness for your company, the approach to event experience design goes way beyond choosing an interesting venue, ordering delicious food or selecting beautiful flowers. As event planners, it\u2019s our mission to design memorable, meaningful, and valuable event experiences for attendees at all points along their event journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several industries use the term \u201cexperience design\u201d to convey this, but it may mean different things to different people. After all, \u201cwhat on earth isn\u2019t an \u201cexperience?\u201d (Bruce Sterling, 2009) \u201cExperience design is closer in spirit to theatre, poetry or even philosophy than it is to the older assembly line,\u201d Sterling writes. <\/span><\/p>\n

For a user experience (UX) designer, the practice refers to optimizing the user experience so that technology operates intuitively and is easy to use. For the Manager of Operations, he\/she may leverage experience design to coordinate people, materials and processes. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the case of event planning, designing a memorable event experience adopts many of the same principles that would be relevant to the aforementioned lines of work, but the most important thing to keep in mind is your attendees. Namely, who are your attendees and what do they need\/want? <\/span><\/p>\n

For your event to go off without a hitch, going paperless will not only allow you to save on printing costs but will also provide you with a streamlined event planning experience. 2. Design a seamless event registration experience<\/b><\/h2>\n

Whether your event is for an association or a corporation, attendees have common needs and wants. When it comes to registration, providing an easy experience with as few hurdles as possible is key. Consider what are the biggest pain points for the attendee during this stage. What are possible solutions? <\/span><\/p>\n

As an event planner, a <\/span>registration system<\/span><\/a> that syncs up data with your CRM system is equally important as designing a great front-facing registration experience for your attendee. The options are endless when you move your registration into the same technical ecosystem as your existing information. Your registration data will allow you to provide a customized event experience for each attendee. For example, perhaps in your pre-event communications, you want to offer a special alumni rate or code to past attendees. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Meet your attendees on their mobile devices with an event app<\/b><\/h2>\n

Your attendees are always on their mobile devices at your event, so it\u2019s the perfect opportunity to take advantage of technology that\u2019s already literally in their hands. Leveraging mobile event technology will add on another layer and elevate the overall event experience. <\/span><\/p>\n
